Pedicure Season is Here… How to find the right professional for the job

It’s that time of year when we are able to ditch the socks and shoes and let our feet breathe in those pretty open toed shoes and sandals. But are your feet ready to see the light of day? As you start to imagine a visit to the salon for that perfect pedicure, here are some tips to ensure you have the safest and most enjoyable experience with no regrets except if you chose the right color polish.

Choosing the right salon… may seem like an easy task, after all there is practically one on every corner. However, there are certain things that you want to look for before scheduling that appointment:

  1. Do a visual inspection of the salon…paying attention to cleanliness especially of the work stations and the instruments and tools being used. Most states require a one time use or disposables rule for all non- sterilizable tools and supplies used to perform the service. Ask about the salons disinfection protocols for foot baths, tools and instruments. Trust your instincts.

  2. Make sure that the professionals are properly licensed… each professional should have their license made readily available for you to view. Don’t be afraid to ask to see the license.

  3. When it comes to pedicures it is highly recommended that your professional has also received advanced pedicure education and training that goes above and beyond the general basics received to obtain their license. There are several options available to professionals for these types of trainings, but please note that in most states it is not required to have additional education or training beyond the basic license. Ask if the pedicure professionals have received any additional Certifications or trainings and request to see their credentials.

  4. Before you even put your feet in the water, you should request a consultation (just like getting your hair done) your professional should perform a thorough foot and lower leg assessment, ask questions and discuss with you the intended service based on their findings.

  5. Ask about the products that are being used during your service and recommended for your at home care and maintenance. Make sure that they are using science based and clinically proven products specific for foot care and won’t contraindicate your foot health.

  6. Time to polish… believe it or not, the nail polish that you choose can be harmful to the health of your nails. Ask about the ingredients in the polishes that are being used. Make sure there are no harmful chemicals that can cause harm to the nails and the surrounding skin. Also, make sure the salon is using a one time use polish method and not double dipping into the bottles.

  7. Once you have found a professional that you feel confident with… Relax and enjoy your pedicure service.
